Biography
Susan Sullivan is a partner at Swanson, Martin & Bell, LLP. Susan leads the firm's Civil Rights and Governmental Liability Practice Group and focuses her practice on the civil rights defense of individual defendants and governmental entities, medical negligence and healthcare defense, and general tort defense and trial practice. Susan’s practice includes representation of the municipalities and individual police officers in Section 1983 civil rights cases, including defending against Monell policy claims. Susan also has extensive experience litigating medical malpractice cases and general tort cases, including wrongful death claims and catastrophic injury cases. Susan has tried numerous cases as lead attorney, achieving successful verdicts in both state and federal court.
Prior to joining Swanson, Martin & Bell, LLP, Susan served as Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Chicago Law Department’s Individual Defense Division and Tort Division. In that role, Susan tried fifteen cases to verdict in the Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division and the Circuit Court of Cook County and prepared numerous cases for trial including wrongful death cases, shooting cases, and cases involving high media exposure. Susan also successfully argued numerous motions for summary judgment, including in wrongful death cases.

Reliford, Horan & Sullivan Obtain Not Guilty Verdict in High-Stakes Paramedic Malpractice Case
Swanson, Martin & Bell, LLP attorneys Arthur J. Reliford, Jr., Kevin P. Horan and Susan E. Sullivan obtained a defense verdict after a two week trial on behalf of their clients, The City of Chicago and two city paramedics, in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois.
